This figural composition seems to have been inspired by sculpture in low relief, most likely by an actual work by either Donatello or Michelangelo. Granacci had been a pupil in the workshop of Ghirlandaio together with Michelangelo. However, Granacci uses the tools of a painter to model his figures in warm colors and soft light, cast from the open landscape behind them. The same figural composition was treated by Bacchiacca in a painting from the same years, now in The Met’s Linsky Collection (1982.60.10).
