Cottage Beneath the Pines
Zheng Zhong spent his early years in his native Anhui, where he took inspiration from the dramatic scenery of the Yellow Mountains (Huangshan). In his later years, he settled in Nanjing, joining the city’s lively scene of painters and patrons. This relatively early work, possibly made before his arrival in Nanjing, shows glimmers of the Anhui regional manner that would coalesce later under artists such as Xiao Yuncong and Hongren—spare, dry linework and fantastic forms—suggesting that Zheng was among the pioneers of this style.
